Australian National Field Days Steer and Carcase Competition 2017/18 Results

3rd April 2018

Australian National Field Days (Orange) Steer and Carcase

Violet Hills entered two teams of purebred Charolais steers in the Australian National Field Days Steer and Carcase competition 2017-2018. We had two different sire groups. Both teams were from the bottom end of the pure bred calves out of frst calf heifers. This resulted in lower carcase weight
and only average performance on grain. When the steers were slaughtered the results were very pleasing.

  • 1st and 2nd for dressing percentage
  • 1st and 3rd for MSA eating quality
  • 2nd and 4th for saleable meat yield
  • 2nd and 3rd for carcase quality

One team came 3rd overall in the competition.

Purebred steer that was Reserve Champion on the hoof

This clearly demonstrates to us that we are producing the type of Charolais that performs very well as a purebred and does not need to be crossed with British breeds to meet industry requirements.
